Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)
Stop Online Piracy Act or better referred to as the SOPA will come to vote on January 24th (next week) in front of the United States House of Representatives, and will change our lives forever if it’s passed, which pretty much puts an end to our freedom of speed and online usage
I totally understand piracy hurts content creators in the industries of music, movies, film productions, and software, which over time has taken a huge impact on their industries. Copyright laws are in place to protect those who create the content, and laws for Intellectual property over the years has been heavy put into use as the website like Pirate Bay, Limewire, Bitorrent, and other huge torrent sharing website have been in and out of court for infringing on these properties.
What is SOPA / Protect IP? Answer is here.
My Thoughts
The SOPA / Protect IP bill is passed, and made into law it will enforcement the copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. I understand protect their intellectual properties is within their rights, but the part i’m not so happy about the rest of the bill when looked at in detail, which states pretty much anyone who hosts, links, supports, views, and even any website the U.S government feels or accuses to be taken down and taken to court. The U.S. government could order the blocking of sites using methods similar to those employed by China. The reasons this SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) has become so huge is because the details on enabling the power to shutdown DNS, Internet Service Providers, online advertising firms who give advertisement to websites who are accused of piracy, search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex etc.) for indexing pages of website accused or piracy, video website (Youtube, Vimeo etc.) for steaming copyright material uploaded by users, online payment services (i.e. PayPal) for providing service to those accused of breaking this law if it’s approved next week.
As you can see it not only affects one person or a small group of people, it affects all of us, and that is the part that is not fair. This law was mainly made from what it seems to be to mainly benefit Hollywood, large corporations, give the government to block websites they seem to want to block similar to what is done in China with censorship, and making extremely difficult for the rest of us.
The SOPA / Protect IP is extremely not beneficial for any of us, please join us today January 18th, 2012 to protest against the “Stop Online Piracy Act” (SOPA) / Protect IP.
